School of Biological Sciences
The School of Biological Sciences, Central University of Kerala was established in 2010 with an aim to undertake cutting edge research, innovation and academic training in the field of Biological Sciences. The school has four departments i) Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, ii) Genomic Science, iii) Plant Sciences and iii) Zoology offering MSc and PhD programmes.
The academic departments under the school are equipped laboratories, and high-tech facilities. Cumulatively, the Departments under the School of Biological Sciences undertook over 64 research projects, received an extramural funding of over 1,929 lakh rupees. Over 108 research scholars were enrolled in PhD and Post-Doctoral Programmes across its departments. From 2016-2021, the School of Biological Sciences yielded over 300 publications in peer reviewed high impact factor journals.
Additionally, the Departments and faculty members of the school are in forefront in undertaking socially responsible academic research. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, had the first non-medical college affiliated COVID-19 testing facility accredited by ICMR. Till date the facility tested over 3 lakh samples for COVID-19. For three years from 2017-2019, the School played a key role in organizing Inspire Internship Science Camp a programme designed to nurture bright young students to take up scientific research.
