School of Physical Science
The School of Physical Sciences, Central University of Kerala is committed to undertake innovative
and pioneering research and contribute to development of basic and applied sciences through its
academic and research programmes. The school currently houses four departments i) Department of
Physics, ii) Department of Mathematics, iii) Department of Chemistry and iv) Department of
Computer Science. All the Departments offer Master of Science and PhD programmes in their
respective disciplines.
The Departments are equipped with high-end laboratory equipment such as Atomic Absorption
Spectrometer (AAS), Fluorescence, FTIR, and UV-VIS spectrophotometers, CHNS Elemental analyzer,
Gas chromatograph, Thermal system (TGA & DSC), electrochemical work stations, Vibrating Sample
Magnetometer, Table top XRD system, thin film fabrication facilities including RF sputtering, nuclear
data acquisition system etc. Additionally, the Departments also possess computer lab facilities such
as Computational laboratory and Signal Processing and Intelligent Systems Lab for high-end
computing needs. The departments have access to analytical tools such as Matlab, Mathematica,
VASP (Materials Design), Gaussian, Comsol etc., to facilitate research and academic programmes.
The Departments under the school are recipients of prestigious research grants such as DST FIST,
DST-SERB, IUAC and DST-RFBR. In the last five years, the Departments cumulatively had more than
five patents, and published more than 400 journal publications. Additionally, the students of the
school regularly qualify in competitive examinations such as GATE & CSIR-JRF.
