Brief Profile
Dr. Laxmi is currently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work, Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod, Kerala, India. She is also serving as the coordinator of Centre for Gerontology since 2018 onwards. She served as Coordinator of Student counseling Centre of Central University of Kerala from 2016 to 2020. She obtained her Ph.D. from Manipal Academy of Higher Education earlier known as Manipal University, Manipal, Karnataka, India. She has huge experience of working with commercial sex workers, people with HIV, tribes, rural women and children. She has worked in various capacities such as state counseling coordinator for HIV/AIDS project, women empowerment project, consultant counselor and as social work educator. She was also the external ICC member for Infosys Technologies Mysuru, Scan Ray Technologies and Larsen and Toubro Ltd., Mysuru. She has various projects on her credit funded by UGC, ICSSR and The Union New Delhi and Karnataka Knowledge Commission. Her area of interest is gerontological social work, gender social work, rural and tribal social work and green social work. Under her leadership and guidance various activities related to elderly empowerment, women empowerment, environmental awareness and rural and tribal empowerment are initiated. As a vigorous and passionate academician, she had organized Seminars and Workshops for the benefit of social work fraternity. To name a few, national conference on “Disaster Management” funded by UGC, New Delhi, Successful Ageing: Paradigms for Post Modern Era funded by NISD, New Delhi, “Challenges in Social Work” supported by Roshni Alumni Association and “Social Legislation for Social Workers”. She has organized various training programmes and workshops for the benefit of Panchayat members, counsellors, social work students and educators. To name a few, “Training Programme on Karnataka Panchayati Raj System” for Panchayath members, “Capacity Building Programme on Drug abuse prevention for school counsellors and social workers” funded by National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), New Delhi. She has published various articles related to women, tribe, self help groups, environment, sanitation and elderly in various national and international journals and books. She has made research paper presentations and chaired sessions in national and international conferences/seminars. She is also the author of book “Self Help Groups and Women Empowerment” and “Active Ageing: Paradigms for Post Modern Era”.
