Brief Profile
Dr. Vellikkeel Raghavan was awarded Ph. D in English by the University of Calicut for his thesis on the political theatres of Dario Fo and Safdar Hashmi. Recruited by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India in 2002 as Assistant Professor in English, he had been working in Panjab University colleges under Chandigarh (UT) Administration till he joined the Central University of Kerala as a faculty member in 2009. Apart from the book Agitation Propaganda Theatre (Chandigarh: Unistar, 2009), he has published in many reputed national and international journals including the Frontline, Indian Literature etc. His English translations of Safdar Hashmi’s (JANAM) Hindi plays, Halla Bol, Masheen and Gaon se Shahar Tak were published by Indian Literature (Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi). He was bestowed with the national award for academic excellence, ‘Guru Praveen’ by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India in 2002. He won the Central European University Scholarship for Advanced Study in Documentary film in 2016. He is an alumnus of the University of Calicut, Kannur University, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII, Pune), and Central European University, Budapest. His academic visits abroad include Austria, Canada, Hungary, Slovakia and Germany. He is the founder Editor of Humanities Circle, the International Journal of Central University Kerala. He was a University Grants Commission Postdoctoral Research Awardee working on 21st Century Indian Political Documentary Films. Dr. Vellikkeel Raghavan’s English translation of Safdar Hashmi/JANAM’s Hindi play Halla Bol was taught as a textbook Loyola Marymount University, USA, Central University of Kerala, and Mahatma Gandhi University. He has been the national level Course Coordinator of the Postgraduate level Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in Film Studies since 2018.
