Brief Profile
Mathew George is Professor with the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Central University of Kerala. Formerly, he was faculty with the Centre for Public Health, School of Health Systems Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai for more than 15 years. He has completed his PhD from the Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and has published his work with Springer in 2017. With a basic training in Public Health, he has research interest in the areas of policy analysis and system strengthening of Indian health services and has several publications to his credit. Further, his interest in social theory and the field of sociology of health and Illness has contributed to his inquiry of public health problems using a social epidemiology approach. His recent work has been on the challenges of developing public health as a unique interdisciplinary field by developing skills and training necessary to develop a public health cadre within the existing health system of the nation. His interest in medical anthropology emerged out of his PhD work keeps his inquiry in the field of 'medicine studies' with special emphasis on medicalisation and overdiagnosis and also interaction of multiple systems of medicine relevant.
