Brief Profile
Dr. V.B. Sameer Kumar did his graduation and post-graduation in Biochemistry from the University of Kerala with a rank. He obtained his research degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Kerala and moved in to the Weizmann Institute of Sciences, Israel, for his post-doctoral research. After completing his project in WIS, he moved to Cincinnati Children’s hospital medical Centre, USA to pursue his second post-doctoral tenure, before he joined as a faculty in the Central University of Kerala. He is also instrumental in designing the course work and curriculum of biochemistry and molecular biology in Universities across Kerala being a member of the board of studies of a couple of Universities and Academic council member of CUK. He holds the portfolios of the Assistant Registrar Purchase, Assistant Registrar Legal, Member Secretary of Institutional Biosafety council of the Central University of Kerala, Quality Assessor, COVID-19 testing lab to mention some.
He specializes in the areas of Tumor biology, Endothelial cell biology, angiogenesis and functional analysis of non-coding RNA. He runs multiple projects totaling a tune of approximately 1.5 Crores in his lab funded by DST, DBT and KSCSTE, which are related to elucidating the role of miRNA in anti-cancer drug resistance and tumor angiogenesis. Work in his lab also focuses on the metabolic regulation of angiogenesis and various aspects of endothelial cell behavior. He has published more than 50 research articles in peer reviewed international journals and books of repute like Nature communications, IJBCB, JCP, JCB, Cells etc. and has presented his work at several National and International Conferences many of which were recognized with an award. His lab is working in collaboration with scientists at the Central Leather Research Institute, Indian Institute of Science and University of Kerala. 4 students have completed PhD, one submitted thesis recently and now 3 students are working for PhD under his guidance. He has successfully guided more than 30 M.Sc. dissertations and 4 M.Phil. dissertations. In recognition of his contributions to the field of science research and teaching, he was conferred the fellowship of the Kerala Academy of Science, by the Hon’ble Governor of Kerala, Justice P. Satashivam in 2018. Further his research has been collated in the BBA raising Star series, which highlights the research, that has the potential to change the course of biological research in the coming decade.
