Brief Profile
Dr. Aswati did M.Sc in Biotechnology from Department of Biotechnology, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) with II rank and completed her Ph.D (Biotechnology) in 2006 from Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB). She has qualified national level exams like CSIR-JRF (among top 20% of qualifiers in 2000), GATE and ARS-NET. During her doctoral research, she was awarded Young scientist award (Biotechnology) in the XVII Kerala Science Congress and Dr. T. R. Sahu award in XIV Annual Conference of IAAT. After working for a brief period as Lecturer (on contract) in Department of Biotechnology at University of Kerala, she pursued her post-doctoral work at RGCB as CSIR-Research Associate and later joined as Lecturer on regular post in 2008 in the Department of Biotechnology, Goa University. She later joined NIT Calicut in Jan. 2009 as Assistant Professor in the School of Biotechnology from where she moved over to CUK as Associate Professor in June 2016. She has completed six research projects as Principal Investigator funded by DBT, DST, NITC-FRG and KSCSTE with DBT and KSCSTE-sponsored research projects being multi-institutional with collaborators from RGCB and JNTBGRI respectively.
The overarching theme of her research involves:
• Understanding the molecular mechanisms of plant-pathogen interactions using Zingiber zerumbet-Pythium pathosystem as a model in view of the unique metabolic architecture and obscure information available for this wild ginger taxon
• Studying endophyte and host metabolite diversity towards development of resources for sustainable disease management
• Identifying molecular factors determining Pythium pathogenesis
She has also been the recipient of BIG-12 (Biotechnology Ignition Grant) from BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) and has been granted a patent and sealed a trademark for a biopesticide product. She has published more than 50 research papers in peer reviewed journals and books. Six scholars have completed Ph.D under her guidance and she has supervised eight B.Tech dissertations and over 27 post-graduate dissertations, till date. She has successfully coordinated three International conferences, one National conference and one workshop. She has also actively taken up various academic/ administrative responsibilities, whenever given a chance.
