Centre for Defence & Security Studies (CDSS)

The Centre for Defence & Security Studies (CDSS) is an endeavor under the School of Global Studies, Central University of Kerala, dedicated to independent, in-depth research, analysis, commentary and discussion on issues of significance within the broad context of India’s national defence and security. The shift from traditional security threats to non-traditional security threats such as terrorism, piracy, cyber terrorism, natural disasters, human trafficking have also made it pertinent to advance the studies in this field. In the light of multiplicity of security challenges that India faces, it is important to investigate the nature and scope of these challenges. The Centre explores the core security challenges before the nation, seeks to generate interest among youth regarding security studies and further domain knowledge and policy inputs. The prime objective of the centre is to enhance quality and innovation in defence and national security studies by initiating interdisciplinary investigations within the fields of national security, defence, and strategic studies. Towards this end, the centre aims to conduct targeted research projects addressing challenges to India's national security. Additionally, the Centre seeks to establish connections with the global security and defence community, the Ministry of Defence (India), various relevant government departments, the defence and diplomatic communities, as well as the media. The centre aspires to facilitate meaningful interactions in the realms of defence and national security. Furthermore, the centre is committed to establishing collaborative research initiatives with defence and security institutions both within India and internationally. The ultimate vision of the centre is transforming knowledge into strategy to ensure security.

Flagship Programme

Sensitization Programme on India’s National Security

The Centre for Defence & Security Studies (CDSS) with its vision of Knowledge, Strategy and Security, organizes sensitization programmes on India’s National Security for students of all levels. In seventy-five years, India has faced wars and numerous skirmishes with various state and non-state actors. Initially as cross-borders incidents, these then took the form of coastal attacks, gradually encompassing non-traditional security threats. National security studies are essential as India has taken a forefront role in global affairs to sustain economic growth and secure its position in the World Order. This would expose India to multi-dimensional security challenges. The multiplicity of security challenges that India faces makes it is important to investigate the nature and scope of these challenges. The Centre aims to sensitize the youth and promote knowledge about India’s National Security and challenges, the role of the armed forces and the various dimensions of security. The programme plans to establish among the students and youth the role they can play in securing the National Security of India. Thus, the aim of the programme is not restricted to discussing national security alone but is about reorienting the youth towards finding solutions to crucial questions of security.

The Objectives of the programme

• Inculcate knowledge about India’s National Security and its importance in the Students from a young age.
• Introduce the various challenges and threats to India’s National Security to students.
• Familiarize the role of Military and Central Armed Police Forces in bolstering India’s National Security.
• Cultivate an initiative among the youth to assist the nation in ensuring India’s National Security.
• Mobilize Indian Youth towards Defence Forces and Defence Establishments.
