Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Extension Services
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Extension Services is an institutional set-up established in Central University of Kerala which facilitates and promotes sustainable social-development in the regions closer to its geographical location by means of carrying out activities based on scientifically sound methods of Sustainable Development, and Social Welfare. Situated in Kasaragod District, the Northern-most part of Kerala, the Centre organizes programmes for its different stakeholders including students, teachers and community members to increase the quality of Human Resource there. The programmes are designed in consonance with their socio- cultural values. It has recently taken some of the critical steps in channeling academic resources of the university to increase the psycho-social ability of school students.
History
On the 89 th birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on 15 th October 2020, Prof. H Venkateshwarlu, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Central University of Kerala, has announced the establishment of a Centre, which is named after the great scientist, for carrying out extension activities of the University. This was a long-cherished dream of the Honorable Vice Chancellor. He has nominated to the leadership position of the Centre Dr. Mohan A. K., Dean, School of Social Sciences and Head, Department of Social Work, Central University of Kerala. Accordingly, Dr. Mohan A. K. took the charge as the first Director of the Centre and Dr. Pratheesh P, Department of Geology, took the charge of Joint-Director of the Centre. Further, the Centre has 11 executive members on its board. As per the decision of the Executive Committee meeting held on 17 th November 2020, the Centre would concentrate on health and hygiene, employment, water and sanitation, social conflict measures, education, and waste management. The meeting has also proposed that the Centre may target the schools and college students, teaching community, and local self-governance as the stakeholders of its programs.
